But there's something special about going to see work at this venue. It fosters a strong sense of community and you enter through the door thinking that something unlikely will happen to you on the inside. Chloe Veltman, SF Weekly |
HOW TO APPLY TO PROGRAMS AT THE GARAGE |
||
In an effort to make it simple to apply for our programs, we ask for the following: a 25-50 word description of your project for 715bryant.org a 300 dpi photo and a 25-50 word biography (usually 12 weeks for each performance and four hours per week) Why is it so simple? We don't want you to jump through hoops to make work at The Garage. Part of our philosophy is that your job is to make art not do fill out forms. We usually book about six months into the future, so it's a good idea to plan ahead. Another suggestion for applying is to come down and introduce yourself and see a show. It's important to us that you know about what we do and that you propose a work that is appropriate for the space. We strongly encourage you to have a facebook page. If you're making work at the The Garage, you should send a request to join our yahoo group (see link on homepage) to see the rehearsal schedule and send schedule requests to joe _ landini at hotmail, we usually update the rehearsal calendar on Mondays. |
The Garage is the home of
AIRspace was originally created at the Jon Sims Center for San Francisco artists to develop production skills and create new work. The Garage selects queer performing artists or artist groups to participate in an ongoing residency that includes fall and/or spring performance showcases for both works-in-progress and finished works. The program is on-going and there are not any deadlines. Some artists are also selected to participate in the National Queer Arts Festival at The Garage in June and to present encore presentations in SPF (summer performance festival). Applications are encouraged in performance, dance, theater and/or any other multi-disciplinary art form. After being selected, resident artists spend a period of time preparing their pieces (usually 12 weeks), then present their work either in a shared program with other artists or individually. The final length of the residency is determined during the application process and periodical evaluations during the initial phase of the residency (the first 12-weeks).

SUGGESTIONS FOR ARTISTS WORKING AT THE GARAGE |
||
PUBLICITY MATERIALS should be submitted 60 days before performances (this is the deadline for In Dance, Theatre Bay Area Magazine and local critics). Publicity photos should be 300 dpi and approximately 4x6 in size. SAFEhouse enthusiastically promotes artists developing new work at The Garage but we are not able to send additional requests for publicity materials. We also encourage artists to join FACEBOOK.COM and send us a friend request. Most Garage events are posted under events and artists should click the LIKE button to become administrators (this will allow you to add photos, descriptions and forward the event to your lists). Most events are posted at BROWNPAPERTICKETS.COM a month before the event. Tickets are normally sold at brownpapertickets.com for $15 (plus a surcharge for the purchaser). Cash tickets for most events can be purchased at the door for a sliding scale of $10-$20. POSTCARDS are usually distributed a month before the performance. It's the artists responsibility to get cards from The Garage and distribute them. PROGRAMS for the performances are usually designed the Monday before your performances. Again, The Garage is not able to send reminders to the artists to send program information, which should include biographies for the artistic collaborators. Unfortunately, we are not able to print biographies for dancers and actors. |
